The Barossa Grape and Wine Tourism Association held their inaugural event 'Barossa At Home' this weekend. Forty four Barossa Wineries held various events. This ranged from the winemaker serving in the Tasting Room and being available to meet people and answer their questions, through to intimate dinners at the winemaker's home.
Rolf Binder decided to hold a Masterclass, showing the consistency of our style and focusing on three classic Barossans - the Shiraz, the Mataro, and the Grenache. These three varieties make up our Heinrich blend, taking the sweet luscious fruit of the Shiraz, the spicy, leathery earthiness of the Mataro, and the sweet confectionary and spice from the Grenache, to make up one of our more popular wines.

When at the Hospice du Rhone, held in Paso Robles in 2007, I became friendly with Bob, an Arizona local with a penchant for fine Rhone Valley reds.
"If ever you are visiting Australia, make sure you look me up", I said.
Bob came by just this last weekend, and brought along his partner, the lovely Suzanne, whom it turned out, I had gone to school with in Adelaide some thirty years ago!

The century-old Mataro has just been picked. The fruit from this vintage is looking exceptional, although it is too early to call whether the whole vintage is "exceptional". This is the fruit that goes on to make the famed "Bulls Blood"

One of the more popular jewels amongst our crown is the Tramino Frizzante.
Made from a blend of cool Gewurztraminer and the sweet globes of Frontignac, the Tramino Frizzante started out as a still wine, and was quite popular in the cellar door.
With the addition of a touch of fizz, what was the "Tramino" is now the "Tramino Frizzante"!

We see a lot of Canadian fans of Rolf Binder Wines in our Tasting Room.
Enzo, Linda, Karen, Anne and Mike come from Port Coquitlam, a river port town east of Vancouver in British Colombia.
Known by the locals as "PoCo", the town sits at the confluence of the Fraser River and the Pitt River. The Coquitlam River borders it on the west, and is where the world revered Canadian Salmon come to spawn. Coquitlam is an indigenous Canadian word for "Little Red Fish", obviously referring to the salmon.

After Round 13
Round 13 was Losers Week, and Binder's Tippers had to vote against their favourites to win the points. Rolf's straight eight has put him in a very good position to gain the number one spot, but undoubtedly Christa still has a few tricks up her sleeve to keep him at bay. Harry and Jo are scrambling to win third place, but at this stage, it is still anyone's game.
Great Rolf Binder
Rolf Binder talks about making and enjoying good wine with America's eminent magazine "Wine Spectator".
"I remember taking a client who was visiting from Germany to Veritas Winery with another work colleague from Adelaide. Old man Binder was serving in the old rustic Cellar Door. My German client said, "I only want to try your best wine." Rolf said, "Not before you try all these others first!" So, together they tried all of the wines. Then Rolf (senior) said, "Come with me for the best wine." He then placed a ladder against a tall tank, collected two glasses, and the both of them climbed the ladder and sat on top of the tank, scooping wine out into their glasses and chatting away in German. No one else was invited up for a taste, and they stayed there for about an hour while me and my colleague sat at the bottom and waited. My German client said that it was the highlight of his whole business trip to Australia."
